Elon Musk's AI venture, xAI, is poised to make its Grok chatbot open source this week. This move aligns with Musk's long-standing advocacy for accessible AI technology, a stark contrast to his criticism of OpenAI's profit-driven approach.
Musk announced the decision via a post on X, formerly Twitter, stating, "This week, @xAI will open source Grok."
Open-sourcing a chatbot like Grok entails making its source code freely available for redistribution. This offers enterprises increased flexibility in problem-solving, allowing them to explore multiple solutions without relying solely on internal teams.
The announcement follows a user suggestion that OpenAI should adopt a similar open-source approach. Musk responded with a blunt "OpenAI is a lie," reiterating his stance on the company's deviation from its original mission.
Musk has been a vocal proponent of open-source AI, expressing his preference during a podcast appearance last November. "I am generally in favour of open sourcing, like biassed towards open sourcing," he stated.
xAI's release of Grok, which reportedly took four months to develop, was met with a playful jab from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Altman shared a post showcasing how Grok could be built with a single prompt on GPT Builder, suggesting that "GPTs can save a lot of effort."
Musk retorted with a humorous critique, stating, "GPT-4 is about as funny as a screendoor on a submarine."
