Following their journey from Leeds to Birmingham and a day of rest, the Indian cricket team resumed training on Friday with an intensive five-hour session.
While Jasprit Bumrah was present at the ground, he did not participate in either bowling or batting drills. As the session was held behind closed doors, it remained unclear whether Bumrah engaged in fitness exercises or practiced bowling independently inside the stadium. However, his absence from the visible net session has fueled speculation. It's worth noting that the other two main fast bowlers from the previous match, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj, also abstained from batting practice. Siraj briefly batted before joining Bumrah and Prasidh inside the ground.
Sources indicate that Bumrah's participation in the Edgbaston Test is unlikely. The Indian team selected him with the understanding that he would only be available for three of the five Tests against England. The predetermined plan was reportedly to have him play in the first and third Tests, with a decision on the fourth or fifth Test based on the series' status. There are significant breaks between the first and second Tests, as well as between the third and fourth.
However, it is crucial to note that he has not been completely ruled out for Edgbaston. Discussions regarding the team composition are still pending, and should Bumrah feel physically fit, he might participate in the Test match starting on Wednesday. India has scheduled an optional training session for Saturday, followed by a day off and another extended session on Monday.
Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep bowled lengthy spells in the nets. Arshdeep dedicated almost half of his net session to bowling with an old, seemingly "prepared" ball. He also bowled around the wicket to right-handed batsmen, potentially indicating a strategic decision based on anticipated conditions. The team might be anticipating reverse swing to play a significant role.
The overall sentiment within the camp is to avoid overanalyzing the defeat at Headingley, where the team repeatedly gained advantageous positions only to lose them. The emphasis is on avoiding drastic alterations to their playing style, focusing instead on consistently executing their processes to attain strong positions and improving their reactions in crucial moments.
