LAS VEGAS -- Ilia Topuria delivered on his promise, emphatically defeating Charles Oliveira by knockout in the first round to claim the vacant lightweight title at UFC 317. The victory, though predicted by Topuria himself, was a stunning display of power and precision.
Topuria (17-0) etched his name in UFC history on Saturday, becoming the 10th fighter to hold titles in two weight divisions. The decisive blow came at 2:27 of the opening round, as Topuria landed a powerful right hand on Oliveira's chin, followed by a left hook that sealed the deal. Oliveira was already falling from the initial impact.
Notably, Topuria stands alone as the only two-division champion in UFC history to maintain an unblemished record.
"I already said it," declared Topuria, who had confidently arranged a celebratory dinner the night before the fight. "I represent the new era of mixed martial arts. This is the next level of the game."
The UFC was quick to capitalize on the victory, immediately bringing Paddy Pimblett into the spotlight. Pimblett, the No. 8-ranked lightweight from Liverpool, England, watched the fight from cageside at T-Mobile Arena. The two fighters share a history, stemming from comments Pimblett made in 2021 regarding the Russo-Georgian War of 2008, which offended Topuria, who is of Georgian descent but represents Spain.
Pimblett entered the cage, facing off with Topuria. Earlier in the week, Topuria expressed his desire to ESPN to fight Pimblett in his first title defense, ideally in Las Vegas.
"If he thinks he's ready, come on. You blond b----," Topuria challenged.
Beyond the post-fight theatrics, Topuria's performance was remarkable. He successfully defended against Oliveira's attempts to clinch and secure takedowns. Even when Oliveira managed to briefly take him to the ground, Topuria reversed the position, ending up on top of the renowned submission specialist.
This victory adds to Topuria's already impressive resume, which includes knockouts of former featherweight champions Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway.
Looking ahead, Topuria has also expressed interest in facing former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, who recently vacated his title in anticipation of a move to the welterweight division.
